Boston Heights -- Two Village Council members will seek for the village's top office on the ballot Nov. 6.
Council President Pro-tem Bill M. Goncy and Council member Teri Slane are running to replace Boston Heights mayor Raymond C. McFall, who did not seek re-election.
Goncy, 59, is a retired carpenter who owns a nursery in Boston Heights with his wife. He has served as a Boston Heights Council member for 19 years and as Council president for 10 years. During that time, he has served on committees such as the AMATZ Technical committee as a representative for small villages.
Slane, 44, is a Realtor. She is serving her 10th year as a Council member. During that time, she has served on various committees, including the finance, streets and highway, planning and zoning, and cemetery committees.
Goncy said he feels he has the experience to tackle issues such as storm water management and the Ohio Department of Transportation's Route 8 project.
"I have the most experience and am very involved in the community," Goncy said. "I have time to spend resolving our issues and finding ways to solve them."
Slane said growth and development within the village is a "must for Boston Heights."
"I will look to the future targeting smart, well-planned growth with great respect to our residents and zoning ordinances," she said. "I believe there can be a balance of development and preservation of the character of Boston Heights."
Slane and Goncy had differing opinions on the future of the former Boston Heights County Club when development proposals were before Village Council in April.
In April, Village Council members approved 4-1 an ordinance to rezone a portion of the former country club to allow for retail purposes. The following month, council voted 4-1 to approve an ordinance allowing large retail uses, also called "big box" retail, along Route 8.
Slane was the sole vote against both issues.
