Out of the Gray: Elusive cupcake proves worth the wait

October 10, 2007

For almost two months, I have been in search of the quintessential Hudson experience that is contained in a morsel of frosting, sweet cake and filling.

I wanted a cupcake, and not just because it's a sugar overload.

I had recently read about Hudson's Main Street Cupcakes in USA Today on Sept. 18 titled "Cupcake bakeries cater to the kid in us." The article described how cupcakes, a typical childhood treat, were becoming a hip national trend with ties to Hudson.

I thought Hudson's cupcake bakery would be a good place to visit and sample this "national trend."

Now, fair warning, I have never bought a cupcake at a store dedicated to cupcakes. Cupcakes were things baked for birthdays, end-of-show parties and potluck dinners.

A store that sold them was a new concept, but one that sounded intriguing. After all, there are several stores selling only ice cream or only coffee -- why not cupcakes?

For the first set of Hudson Monday meetings I covered, I thought a cupcake would be the perfect break between covering the School Board and covering the planning commission.

I walked down Main Street on a sunny evening, picturing the tasty treat I was about to eat only to discover the store is closed on Mondays.

It seemed my schedule and the store's hours never matched. I either showed up too early on a Saturday morning during the Hudson Farmers Market or too late Tuesday evening after a meeting.

I was beginning to wonder if there was a hint I was missing.

Maybe cupcakes weren't for me. Maybe there was too much sugar in them or maybe I would finally eat one only to discover it wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

Well, I finally had a cupcake from Hudson's Main Street Cupcakes.

A co-worker decided to bring in some as a birthday treat recently and I snagged one and only one. That cupcake was so rich I couldn't have eaten another.

This was no bring-a-birthday-treat-to-school cupcake. This was a cupcake made to be enjoyed with a cup of espresso, latte or some other kind of exotic coffee while sitting on a patio.

This was a treat.

So now I am happy to say I have had my cake and eaten it, too. It is time to move onto the next Hudson experience -- what is this "Harry Potter Extravaganza" I keep hearing about?
