Superintendent lists potential cuts if levy fails

Hudson Schools Superintendent Steve Farnsworth on Wednesday presented a list of $5.6 million in staff and program cuts that may be implemented if the district’s levy does not pass in November.

“I will reiterate here that none of these recommendations are meant to be a threat to our public,” Farnsworth told the Board. “The reality is that our district will look considerably different if the levy does not pass in calendar year 2010 and the quality of the educational experience for our students will be significantly diminished.”

Farnsworth said he would recommend the district immediately cut $1.32 million from the budget if the levy fails. That would include laying off 10 staff members and eliminating high school busing and all field trips.

He said he would recommend pay-to-play fees of $400 per sport at the high school, $200 per sport at the middle school, and $200 for marching band members. There would be a $1,200 cap per family, Farnsworth said. Students currently do not have to pay to participate in sports or marching band.

Farnsworth would also recommend $4.21 million in cuts for the 2011-12 school year, he said. They would include 42 teachers, one social worker, and the middle school athletic director.

Farnsworth declined to discuss the specifics of the teacher cuts, but said some teachers have been notified that they could be let go.

I am sorry Mr. Farnsworth, but your targets are exactly meant to be a threat. When you list line items that are directly student related, it is meant to invoke an emotional response. Not one item on your list addresses any administrative reductions or cuts that are on the table. You have chosen to take the same route as municipalities go when they say they will cut first responders.

We are living in dire economic times, and many people living within the Hudson School District have had to come up with very creative ways with doing with less. Many with reductions in salaries or reduced work hours. Welcome to the universe of reality! If we have to live with less, then maybe it is time for you to do the same.
