by Tim Troglen Reporter Hudson -- Final state report card results have confirmed what preliminary results showed -- the Hudson City School District is "excellent," but no longer designated "excellent with distinction." The Ohio Department of Education released its official state report card data Aug. 27. The district met 26 out of 26 indicators on its report card, achieving state standards for test score results and graduation and attendance rates, to earn at least an "excellent" rating for the 10th consecutive year. "There is a lot of good news in our annual report card," Hudson Superintendent Steve Farnsworth said. "Our students are outperforming their peers in comparable school districts and are well prepared for their next level of education. We are proud of our students and our staff." The district did not achieve the "Excellent with Distinction" rating because fourth- and fifth-grade test scores did not exceed state set "value added" standards, according to Hudson Schools Director of Curriculum and Instruction Doreen Osmun. Value added standards measure students' progress over a two-year period. "We are not pleased about that," Farnsworth said of losing the "with distinction" designation. "We have looked at the data and will make improvements in order to help our students exceed annual progress at every level." More than 90 percent of Hudson students scored at efficient or above in 23 indicators, included tests in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. Eleventh-graders scored the highest, with between 99.1 percent and 100 percent of students passing tests in reading, math, writing, science and social studies. Students in fourth and fifth grades met, but did not exceed, value added standards in reading and math. In fourth-grade math, 90.8 percent of students passed the test, compared to 94.5 percent last year. In reading, 93 percent of fourth-graders passed the test, compared to 92.5 percent last year. In fifth-grade math, 89 percent of students passed this year, compared to 85.7 last year. Fifth-grade reading scores were 93.1 percent this year, compared to 94 percent last year. The district's 2009-10 graduation rate was 99.3 percent. Its attendance rate across all grades was 95.9 percent. The school district's performance index score was 108.3, which ranked in the top 5 percent in the state, Osmun said. Many other high performing school districts were unable to exceed the state's expected value added measures and lost the "with distinction" rating this year, Farnsworth said. Osmun said overall she is proud of the district, and particularly the middle school, which was rated "Excellent with Distinction." The high school and McDowell and East Woods elementary schools all earned "excellent" ratings. The report card data uses only third- through 11th-grade testing scores. Throughout the state, performance levels increased in this year's tests, according Deborah S. Delisle, superintendent of public instruction. "Educators, students, parents and communities should be proud of the promising academic gains we continue to see in Ohio schools," she said. "More districts have earned a rating of effective or higher on the 2009-10 report cards, and no additional districts were ranked in Academic Emergency."
