100 Years and cooking The Hudson Library and Historical Society continues its centennial celebration with a cooking program for kids "One Hundred Years and Cooking." Beginning at 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 23, students in third to fifth grades can explore the culinary sensations of four different time periods in the past century with chef Audrey Hylton, culminating in a Thanksgiving feast. This program will take place in the Flood Family Meeting Room at 4:15 p.m. Sept. 23, Oct. 7 and 21, and Nov. 4 and 18. Hylton is a graduate of the Academy of Culinary Arts in Mays Landing, N.J. She has worked as an assistant pastry chef at Parker's and as a food writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Tutors help with homework The Hudson library offers a Homework Connection tutoring program. The Homework Connection is a free homework help service for middle school and high school students every Monday in the Teen Room from 3:30 to 5 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. This drop-in program begins Sept. 13. It will not take place on Mondays when there is no school. Volunteer math and language arts tutors will be available to help students with assignments. The library partners with the Hudson Schools in this community outreach effort. Students from the high school's National Honor Society have volunteered their services for this program. Wear pajamas to Sleepytime Stories The next session of Sleepytime Stories at the Hudson library will be on Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. This on-going drop-in program takes place on the first Tuesday of every month and features stories, songs and activities for children of all ages and their families. Pajamas and pillows are welcome. Future sessions are on Oct. 5, Nov. 2 and Dec. 7. This is a free program and registration is not required. For more information, call 330-653-6658 ext. 1020. 'Hunger Games' challenges teens Teens can celebrate Suzanne Collins' and her "Hunger Games" trilogy on Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Hudson library's Cornucopia Challenge. Teens will race to the Cornucopia and use their wits to select the best tools for a series of silly survival challenges, such as building a paper airplane for an escape. Cookbooks will be featured at the next Friends of the Hudson Library book sale Sept. 4 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Novels by best-selling authors Sandra Brown and James Patterson will also be featured at the sale. The Friends book sale room has a wide variety of books, movies and music for all ages and interests. Donations from the community arrive daily, and the items available for each sale are constantly updated and changed. The Friends appreciate donations of books, CDs and DVDs. The Hudson Library and Historical Society will present the second of a three-part series of previews of this season's Cleveland Orchestra concerts on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. Dr. Rose Breckenridge earned her Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University and leads the Cleveland Orchestra's Music Study Groups. She will review The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, part of the Cleveland Orchestra concert to be presented on Sept. 23 and 25 at Severance Hall. The preview, geared to both new and experienced music lovers, will include background on the both the composer and the composition, as well as guided listening to musical excerpts. The final program in this Cleveland Orchestra Previews Series will be at the library on March 10. Breckenridge will preview the Mozart opera "Don Giovanni" which will be performed at Severance Hall in March 2011. These programs are free and open to the public. No registration is required. The Hudson Library and Historical Society will host the next meeting of the library's "Opera Study Group" lecture series, led by the Rev. Brian Suntken of Hudson's Christ Church Episcopal, on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. The group will explore Georges Bizet's opera, "The Pearl Fishers," with DVD excerpts from various international productions. Suntken's presentation will prepare participants for the production being presented by Opera Cleveland on Sept. 23, 25 and 26 at the State Theatre in Cleveland. All music lovers are invited to participate, and there is no registration required for this free program.
