The Western Reserve Academy girls cross country team placed 10th with 275 points at the 15-team 2010 Early Bird Invitational Aug. 28 at Kent State University Geauga in Burton. Shaker Heights won the competition with 56 points and Chardon (82) and Cleveland St. Joseph Academy (116) placed second and third, respectively. Chardon’s Corinne Kule placed first out of 228 runners with a time of 19 minutes, 44.05 seconds. Junior Krista Sandercock led the Lady Pioneers with a 12th-place finish of 20:56. Lucy Cummins was next in 64th (22:52) and freshman Linda Adams was Reserve’s third runner (65th, 22:52). Rounding out the top seven were Hudson resident Hannah Gaspar (91st, 23:37), a sophomore, senior Sandra India (95th, 23:48), freshman Halle Sovich (118th, 24:37) and senior Calli McKenna (120th, 24:42). Also running for WRA were juniors Elena Deighan (136th, 25:12) and Katherine Winford (151st, 25:57). “We graduated five of our top eight runners last season, so I wasn’t sure how things would work out this year,” Lady Pioneers head coach Jeffrey Warner said. “The good news for us is that it looks like we’ll be just fine — younger and not initially as strong. “But we have a group that’s solid now, that will certainly become stronger as we move further into the season and that will run for WRA for the next few years.” Sandercock’s time was just nine seconds off her personal-best time. Gaspar ran two minutes faster than she did at this race last year. Senior Meghan Gerrie, a team captain, also is on the team. “We have a ways to go if we’re going to challenge for any invitational championships, but the framework is here for a strong Division III team. We just need to keep developing as individuals and as a team.” The Lady Pioneers are scheduled to compete at the Malone University Invitational Sept. 4 in Canton. The race is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. — From staff reports E-mail: stowsports@recordpub.com Phone: 330-686-3914
