The Western Reserve Academy boys cross country team finished eighth with 199 points at the 10-team 23rd annual George Clements Invitational Aug. 28 in Hunting Valley.

A total of 10 teams competed.

Chardon won the competition with 28 points and Gates Mills Gilmour Academy (44) and University (94) finished second and third, respectively.

Gilmour’s James Miller placed first out of 147 runners with a time of 17 minutes, 25 seconds. The Pioneers brought six runners.

Senior team captain Jack Hoover led Reserve with a 21st-place time of 19:08. Sophomore Nick Sovich placed 29th (19:33) and senior Foss Baldwin captured 60th (20:38).

Also competing for WRA were junior Dane Engelhart (82nd, 21:25), sophomore Brandon Kramer (101st, 22:06) and junior Jon Farr (107th, 22:22).

“We will be a very young team this year as far as experience is concerned,” Pioneers head coach James Fraser said. “Jack Hoover will be quite good. Nick Sovich will be our second man in most meets.

“Foss Baldwin will be more competitive as the season progresses.”

The rest of the varsity spots will challenged by Engelhart, Kramer, sophomores Jake Hutner, Mitesh Mehta and Mark Shen, seniors John Levis and Nate Barnett, juniors Brandon Williams and Robert Head, as well as freshmen Philip Ellis and Alex Wheaton.

WRA is set to compete at the Avon Lake Invitational Sept. 4 at 11 a.m.
