Women invited on weekend retreat

Rejoice Lutheran Church is accepting registrations for "Hidden Heroes of the Gospel" -- a relaxing weekend of uplifting music, faith-inspired discussion and Christian fellowship for women.

Participants will learn about research that suggests women are the real heroes of the Gospels when the dramatic art of the gospels is understood.

The retreat will be Oct. 8, 9 and 10 at Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Retreat Center in Bemus Point, N.Y., about a two-hour drive from Hudson. The retreat leader is the Rev. Barbara Holzhauser. Participants will pray, worship, sing and laugh together as they study God's Word in a casual and relaxed setting.

For more information about how to register, visit www.rejoicelc.org or e-mail office@rejoicelc.org. Register before Sept. 20. The cost of the weekend retreat is $140, or $115 for first-time retreaters.

Program looks at pilgrimage to Egypt

The Rev. Kay Rackley, associate rector at Christ Church Episcopal, 21 Aurora St. in Hudson, will present "An Egyptian Pilgrimage" on Sept. 15, 22 and 29 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Rackley will share the experiences of her pilgrimage to Egypt. She spent three weeks in Egypt and Jordan with a group that visited the sacred sites of ancient Egypt. She will share her understanding of Egypt's culture and belief systems, her experiences at the sacred sites, and the wisdom that this ancient culture offers today. The sessions are free and open to the public.

Chapel welcomes newcomers

The women of Hudson Community Chapel will help new residents get to know the community at a newcomers brunch Sept. 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the church, 750 W. Streetsboro St.

The brunch, which will be in the conference room, is followed up by a weekly class which is designed for women who are looking for fellowship, friendship and a way to get plugged in to their new area. The study group will work through the book "After the Boxes Are Unpacked-Moving On After Moving In" by Susan Miller. Childcare will be provided for the informational brunch and during the weekly study. Books are available through the class.

Local chefs participate in cooking tour

Plans for the fifth annual What's Cooking? Kitchen and Tasting Tour are under way. The fundraiser, sponsored by the Women's Guild of St. Mary Church, is slated for Nov. 7 from noon to 4 p.m. in six homes in the Village, Firelands and Canterbury neighborhoods.

What's Cooking? will showcase chefs from Bistro on Main in Kent, Moe's in Cuyahoga Falls and Downtown 140, Leo's Reserve Inn, North End Market and Rosewood Grill from Hudson. Patrons will tour the first floor of each home at their leisure and sample offerings from the chefs stationed in the kitchens.

The ticket price of $45 admits patrons to all six venues and will be available at Acme Fresh Market and The Learned Owl.

Tickets sales will be limited to 400 for this advance-ticket only event, and directions to each home will be provided on the tickets. No tickets will be sold at the door.

Patrons may view the homes in any order, and water will be available at each site.

Proceeds benefit charities, many focusing on women and children in need.
