by Tim Troglen Reporter Hudson -- The school district has received an "excellent" rating on its state report card but did not earn the coveted "with distinction" designation, according to preliminary results. "We are disappointed," said Hudson Schools Director of Curriculum and Instruction Doreen Osmun. "But there is still so much to be proud of." The Ohio Department of Education released the preliminary 2009-10 state report card data Aug. 24. Final results, expected to be released Aug. 27, were not available by press time. The district met 26 out of 26 indicators, achieving state standards for test score results and graduation and attendance rates, to earn an "excellent" rating. However, the district did not achieve the "Excellent with Distinction" rating because fourth- and fifth-grade test scores did not exceed state set "value added" standards, Osmun said. Value added standards measure students' progress over a two-year period. The district will make a determination on why the test scores did not exceed the expected growth after the final data is release, Osmun said. "When you have the top performing students in a district, they can only grow so much," Osmun said. The district will develop a detailed plan to increase the scores, Osmun said. "The report card value added data is very disappointing, but we are extremely proud of our students," Osmun said. "We are always looking for ways to improve our practices. Our teachers, principals and administrators will work together to improve. It is our commitment to our students and to our community." The Hudson School District has been ranked at least "excellent" each year since report cards were introduced in 2000. It earned the "Excellent with Distinction" rating both years since it was introduced in 2008. On its 2009-10 report card, the district met value-added criteria in fourth through eighth grades, and adequate yearly progress -- pre-determined goals set by the state. The district's performance index, which measures achievement of individual students, was at 108.3, Osmun said. That ranks in the top 5 percent in the state, according to Osmun. The performance index, according to the Ohio Department of Education, are points the schools and districts earn based on how well each student fares on all tested subjects.
