Hudson Community Education and Recreation offers the following exciting new programs. Registration is ongoing, and participants should register early as space is limited.

Tots Learn to Skate
at the Pond offers children ages 3 to 6 have opportunity to learn to ice skate in a fun, and age appropriate program. The program includes a 30-minute instruction period, and a 30-minute practice time. The registration fee includes instruction, skate rental, gliders and helmets. Evaluations and a graduation pizza party are also included. Class meets Fridays Aug. 27 through Oct. 15 from noon to 1 p.m. at The Pond, 9999 E. Washington St. in Chagrin Falls.

Beginner Bridge Lessons with instructor Cathy Taylor offers an introduction to playing bridge. It will cover the fundamentals of contract bridge, including vocabulary, bidding, responding, doubling, scoring and basic play of hand. Class meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to noon, Aug. 30 to Sept. 20 at the Summa Wellness Center, Conference Room 3.

Tennis USA 123 is a program for adults to learn to play tennis that utilizes a fun, group format to teach the basics of the game. This series of eight low-cost lessons is offered Aug. 30 to Oct. 24. Participants choose one day per week: Mondays 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 7 to 8 p.m.; Tuesdays 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; Wednesdays noon to 1 p.m.; Saturdays 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; or Sundays noon to 1 p.m.

All tennis classes meet at Western Reserve Racquet Club, 11013 Aurora Hudson Road.

Portrait Drawing - Join instructor Susan Zimmerman for an informative class on portrait drawing. Learn shading techniques, linear use, perspective and color theory. The class is for beginners as well as the more advanced student. Portrait drawing classes meet Tuesdays Sept. 7 to Oct. 12 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Barlow Community Center Memorial Room.

Creative Basketball Skill Development for boys and girls ages 8-18 helps participants improve their basketball skills. Quality instruction, including a creative, rigorous, fun, positive and nurturing environment is the best recipe for growth and long term success on and off the court, according to instructor Paul Haught, founder and owner of the Cleveland Basketball School. The class is offered on Sept. 1, 10, 17 and 24 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the East Woods Elementary main gym.

Series looks at renowned artists

A free educational series titled "Through the Eyes of the Artist" continues once a month on Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Laurel Lake Retirement Community, 200 Laurel Lake Drive in Hudson.

This monthly art history lecture series with local art historian Felicia Zavarella Stadelman uncovers details about some of the world's most renowned artists. Each presentation is enhanced with music, prints and images. Each day will focus on a different artist.

The series will feature Claude Monet on Aug. 26; Michelangelo on Sept. 30; Andrew Wyeth on Oct. 28; Tamara DeLempicka on Nov. 11; and Edgar Degas on Dec. 2.

These programs are free and open to the public. Registration is required.

Course studies
Henry VIII

Case Western Reserve University will offer a fall course, "Henry VIII: Was He Misunderstood?" beginning Sept. 20 at 1:30 p.m. at Laurel Lake Retirement Community, 200 Laurel Lake Drive in Hudson.

The instructor for the eight-week course is Case Western Reserve University Off-Campus Studies faculty member Betty Zak.

Participants will explore Henry VIII 500 years after his rise to the throne, in light of his time, his court, his enemies and his friends. They will learn about the political upheavals and "hot button" issues that motivated some of his most infamous decisions.

The course uses two texts: "Henry VIII: The King and His Court" by Alison Weir, and "Henry VIII: Court, Church and Conflict" by David Loades. These texts are available at local libraries or may be purchased at the Learned Owl Book Shop in Hudson.
