by Tim Troglen Reporter Hudson -- Fall classes begin Aug. 27 for students at Hudson Montessori School, 7545 Darrow Road. The school, which offers program for toddlers through students in eighth grade, expects close to the same enrollment as last year, 265, said Michelle Lazor, head of admissions. Students will see an expanded instrumental music program for fifth- through seventh-graders. "And we are excited about adding guitar as one of the instrument options," Lazor said. The school will also continue after-school clubs for students in kindergarten through sixth grade which started last year "with great success," Lazor said. "Clubs range from sports, art, robotics, drama, science, knitting, technology, junior engineering, Spanish, chess, TaeKwonDo and Tool Time," Lazor said. "Our parent/toddler program, which is for students 18 months to 3 years old, has doubled in size during the past school year. In response, we are offering an additional class this year." Earlier this year, Montessori purchased a home at 7589 Darrow Road for $116,000. The 1,800-square-foot, one-story, six-room, single family home is currently under renovation. The current middle school facility will be combined with the middle school learning center at the new building, said Julia Brown, head of school. "We look forward to the expansion of our current middle school facility with an expected completion date of January 2011," Lazor said. "We are beginning our sixth year of the Hudson Montessori Middle School program." Students will also see four new teachers around the 7-acre campus. Three middle school teachers and one for Children's House, a classroom for 3- to 6-year-olds, have been added, Lazor said. The school, founded in 1962 as an elementary school, has added a middle school, parent toddler class and all-day programs for 3- and 4-year-olds in the past five years. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own pace and according to their own choice of activities from hundreds of possibilities, Lazor said. Montessori classes place children in three-year age groups, forming communities in which the older children spontaneously share their knowledge with the younger ones, Lazor added.
