Doctor joins Akron Children's Hospital Dr. Marc Nelson of Hudson has joined the Ear, Nose and Throat Center at Akron Children's Hospital. Nelson specializes in treating infants, children and teens with a wide range of problems related to the head and neck. This includes hearing loss, chronic ear infections, tumors, sinus and nasal procedures and complex airway management. He also will start a cochlear implant program. Nelson completed his fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at the University of Michigan. Prior to his fellowship, Nelson was a partner with Summit Ear, Nose and Throat Inc., and was an attending physician at Akron Children's, Akron General Medical Center, and Summa Health System. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, and completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic. Chamber continues education series The Hudson Area Chamber of Commerce Education Series continues Sept. 3 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Barlow Community Center with a workshop focused on building sales. Three experts in the field will meet with small groups and offer advice on how to cultivate relationships, motivate sales teams, and boost sales. The cost is $20 for Chamber members and $50 for non-members. This will be a small-group format, with each group having more than 30 minutes with each expert. Participants will have time to ask questions pertaining specifically to their businesses and gain advice on how to improve their sales efforts. The experts will include Jeff Nischwitz, founder of Think Again, a training, consulting and coaching company that helps people and organizations build relationships that drive results, navigate change, and improve effectiveness and execution. He is a national speaker and trainer on various topics. He will share his perspectives on shifting from a transactional sales approach to a relationship building model to improve sales results. Holly Rhoads, a partner of The Ruby Group, will discuss "Incenting your sales team." The Ruby Group provides sales, sales management, and non-traditional business training to more than 200 clients in Northeast Ohio. Donna Kastner of Enlighten 123 will present "Five ways to power up your prospecting." Jo-Ann offers contest to help charities Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores has initiated the Craft for a Cause program where crafters can win donations to their favorite charities. "Our customer research has shown that many of the items purchased in our stores are used to make crafts to support charitable causes," said Brent Beebe, vice president of crafts merchandising for Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. "We recognize that there are many organizations that can benefit from the donation of crafted projects. Craft for a Cause is one way that we can make a difference together." Participants can create a craft for their favorite charitable organizations using materials purchased from Jo-Ann and donate the item to an organization. They may complete entry forms at Joann.com/craftforacause by Oct. 30. Receipts and photographs are required. A panel of sewing and crafting experts will then judge all eligible entries and will select five winners based on the quality/workmanship, creativity and functionality of the item for the chosen organization, as shown in the photographs The top five entries will each win a $1,500 Jo-Ann gift card. The three charitable causes receiving the most donated items will become Craft for a Cause finalists. Starting Nov. 7, guests may vote at Joann.com for the favorite finalist. School of Style donating dresses Design It School of Style in Hudson will open its doors for a non-profit initiative called Little Dresses for Africa, which provides relief to the children of Africa, on Sept. 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This organization has received and donated dresses from all 50 states, with 65,000 dresses being distributed to 14 countries in Africa. Anyone interested in learning to create their own pillow case dresses, while contributing to a worthy cause, are welcome to participate. The dresses will be sent to little girls in orphanages in Africa as part of an ongoing effort to provide clothing to underprivileged children and inspire them at the same time. Parents can also register their children at this free event for fall class sessions at 25 percent off enrollment. Design It School of Style teaches youngsters about needle arts and fashion design. Participants should bring their own pillow case to the event at the Hudson Studio, 186 N. Main St., above Dave's Cosmic Subs; 15 participants will be accepted every two hours. Hudson Community First's Asset Builder of the month is the Taste of Hudson. The year-long program features businesses and organizations that support youth. This month Taste of Hudson will focus on volunteerism. Volunteers are needed at Taste of Hudson for children's activities, Pepsi cart sales, beverage distribution, information and card sale tents, entertainment stages, parking control, Acme Avenue tents, North End Wine and Beer Garden, set-up and tear down, and trash control assistance. TOH volunteer sponsors include: Hudson Community Chapel, ProStar Specialties, Shanaberger Financial Services LLC., Pepsi, Acme Fresh Market, Shearer's and Cleveland Indians. Taste of Hudson volunteers who work a minimum 4-hour shift will receive a T-shirt, lunch, bottled water and a Cleveland Indians voucher good for two upper box seats for a September home game.
