'Hunger Games' challenges teens Teens can celebrate Suzanne Collins' and her "Hunger Games" trilogy on Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Hudson library's Cornucopia Challenge. Teens will race to the Cornucopia and use their wits to select the best tools for a series of silly survival challenges, such as building a paper airplane for an escape. The Hudson Library and Historical Society's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship Research will begin its fall 2010 Entrepreneurship Series on Sept. 7. Since its inception in the fall of 2008, the research center has assisted scores of individuals from the small business community, providing access to print and online resources, DVDs and audiobooks, programming and business counseling services, all geared towards assisting entrepreneurs getting a business established or expanding one that already exists. The Entrepreneurship Series of events has had more than 2,500 people attend, some even coming from out of state. The fall series starts at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 with "Workplace Behavior Explained: Are entrepreneurs born or made?" The presenter will be Scott Shane, the A. Malachi Mixon III Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies of Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management. He will discuss his latest book, "Born Entrepreneurs, Born Leaders: How Your Genes Affect Your Work Life." On Sept. 23 at 7 p.m., Mark Geyman, founder and owner of OhioBiz.com, will discuss the importance of Local Search for small businesses and organizations, and Search Engine Optimization strategies. OhioBiz.com is Ohio's largest, locally-owned business directory and also one of the first "locally/regionally-focused" search directories in the country. On Oct. 5 at 7 p.m., Greg Graham of the Kent State University School of Business will talk about "Idea Selling" and how to put it to work for a business. On Oct. 18 at 7 p.m., John Myers of the Akron Archangels Investment Network will explain how "Angels" and venture capitalists work as small business funding options. On Nov. 8 at 7 p.m., entrepreneur and educator Dr. Robert J. Hannemann, director of the Tufts Gordon Institute at Tufts University School of Engineering in Massachusetts, will discuss "Entrepreneurship and the Green Economy." On Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m., Jim Griggy, certified business advisor at the Ohio Small Business Development Center at Summit Medina Business Alliance Inc., will explain how to read financial statements using meaningful comparisons and financial ratios in a program he calls "Numbers Demystified." The Hudson Library and Historical Society will present the second of a three-part series of previews of this season's Cleveland Orchestra concerts on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. Dr. Rose Breckenridge earned her Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University and leads the Cleveland Orchestra's Music Study Groups. She will review The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky, part of the Cleveland Orchestra concert to be presented on Sept. 23 and 25 at Severance Hall. The preview, geared to both new and experienced music lovers, will include background on the both the composer and the composition, as well as guided listening to musical excerpts. The final program in this Cleveland Orchestra Previews Series will be at the library on March 10. The Peninsula Library, 6105 Riverview Road, will host an evening on the topic of elder law on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. Attorney Margie Karl will lead a free seminar, explaining what a living trust means for a family and how to protect family's estate. Between the Lines book club meets Sept. 13 The Hudson Library and Historical Society's Between the Lines book club meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, usually in the Laurel Lake Room on the first floor of the library. The Hudson Genealogical Study Group resumes its fall schedule of meetings at 10 a.m. on Aug. 28 at the Hudson library. Hudson Library Archivist Gwendolyn Mayer will present "Introduction to Genealogy and Genealogical Resources at the Hudson Library." The meeting is free and open to the public.
