by Tim Troglen Reporter Hudson -- Thanks to the new start and stop times, buses will take only two trips each day to pick up or drop off students instead of three trips as they did last year. The district has switched from a three-tiered transportation system to a two-tiered system. In the two-tiered system, drivers will pick up elementary school students in one trip, and middle and high school in the next. In the three-tiered system, each bus makes three sets of pick-ups and drop-offs each morning and afternoon, according to Business Manager Derek Cluse. The new start and stop times help make it possible to switch to the two-tier system. "The elementary start and stop time schedules are more similar now than they were in the past," Communications Manager Sheryl Sheatzley said. "And with the changes starting this year at the middle and high schools, with the new times, we only need to run two tiers of transportation." The transportation department "has been working diligently and putting a lot of resources into the routing so we don't overlook anything," Cluse said. Peterman Inc., the district's new transportation provider, has hired almost 100 percent of last year's bus drivers, Cluse said. Most of the drivers will drive the same routes as last year, Cluse said. Bus drivers began "dry runs" of the routes Aug. 18, said Linda Harry, interim transportation supervisor. The dry runs ere expected to continue through Aug. 20. "We've been doing this for many, many years," Harry said. "And I expect a smooth start." Harry has been with Peterman for 20 years and works out of the Cincinnati area, she said. "The parents [in Hudson] are just been wonderful," she said. "It makes you want to move here." The district has sent a transportation handbook to families of students who ride the buses, Cluse said. The book contains the new phone number (330-653-3355) parents can call if they have any problems with the bus routes. General information about the bus routes will be available at the schools and on the school district website (www.hudson.edu) before school begins, Cluse said.
