by Holly Schoenstein Reporter Aurora -- U.S. Rep. Steven LaTourette (R-Bainbridge) offered his take on national issues that are affecting local businesses at the 3 Chamber August Lunch, Aug. 10 at the Bertram Inn and Conference Center in Aurora. Twinsburg, Aurora and Solon chambers of commerce came together to host the event, which about 180 people attended, according to Mary Sullivan, executive director of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce. LaTourette spoke about increased government regulation at the federal level, such as emissions cap and trade policies and the health care overhaul bill passed by the Obama administration last spring, that he believes restricts local businesses. According to Doug Johnson, executive director of the Twinsburg Chamber of Commerce, this is the seventh time LaTourette has spoken at an event associated with the Twinsburg Chamber and the first time he's spoken at a 3 Chamber event. "Right now the business community is being hammered by national regulation," Johnson said. "I think it's very important to attend these kinds of things." He said having the Congressman speak at the luncheon was beneficial to Chamber members because, through LaTourette, they have tangible contact with the national Legislature. In response to a question from the audience, LaTourette spoke hopefully of careers for his children -- and future generations -- in health care, biotechnology, sciences and green energy fields. "This is the greatest country in the world ... We'll bounce back from this [recession]," he said. Sullivan declined to give her opinion of LaTourette's talk because she said the Aurora Chamber of Commerce doesn't take political stances, adding that both Democrats and Republicans had a "good time." "All three chambers are in his district," she said. "It's nice that these three communities can come together." E-mail: hschoenstein@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3152 Comments
