An Akron resident was sentenced to 12 years in prison on July 30 following his guilty plea to numerous counts of fraud, including several incidents involving Hudson residents.

Michael Bukuts, 46, of Akron on July 9 pleaded guilty to engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, passing bad checks, telecommunication fraud, grand theft, forgery, tampering with records, identification fraud, theft from the elderly and failing to remit to the state tax collected.

In addition to the jail time, Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Patricia Cosgrove ordered Bukuts to make restitution of $114,024 to the state of Ohio and $9,573 to the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation.

A year-long investigation began with a report from a Hudson victim. There were 71 known victims, at least 56 from Hudson, and possibly hundreds more, according to Hudson police. Many of them were elderly.

Prosecutors say Bukuts was stealing credit card information that he obtained from a dry cleaning business, DC LeClair Dry Cleaning, located in Akron and Brecksville, and using it to pay for his own purchases.
