BETTY MAE (SALMONS) LAWRENCE Loved baking, gardening

Betty Mae (Salmons) Lawrence, 85, died July 16, 2010, at the Hospice Center in Copley following a prolonged illness.

Born in Ham's Prairie, Mo., on March 15,1925, and raised in Callaway County, Mo., she was the daughter of Vollie and Lucille (Shryock) Salmons. She was a 55-year resident of Fulton, Mo.

Mrs. Lawrence met her husband, James W. Lawrence, in 1948 while working as a store clerk at P.N. Hirsch. They were married at the Salmons' farm on June 26, 1949. She babysat for countless children in her home over a 20-year period. At the age of 50, she started working at the Missouri School for the Deaf as a house parent for the 14-18-year-old male students and was fluent in sign language. She retired at 72.

Mrs. Lawrence loved to bake and was renowned for her amazing peach cobbler. Her love of gardening is evidenced by her beautiful yard. She was a long time member of the Church of God (Holiness) in Fulton. She was an avid Cardinals fan.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, James W. Lawrence; their son, Terry (Carolyn) Lawrence of Hudson; two grandchildren, Lori (Andrew) Thomas and James (Merideth) Lawrence; three great-grandchildren, Libby and Will Thomas and Maggie Mae Lawrence; brothers, Albert (Bernice) Salmons, Ernest (Minnie) Salmons, Vollie "Ted" (Phyllis) Salmons and Joe (Jackie) Salmons; sister, Dorothy (Eugene) Vaughan; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her grandson, Ryan Lawrence; brothers, Roy Salmons, Robert Salmons, Leo Salmons and Glen Salmons; and sisters, Francis Scheilz and Pearl Hamilton Palmer.

Friends will be received at Maupin Funeral Home on July 21 from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be July 22 at the Church of God (Holiness) in Fulton. Interment will be at Callaway Memorial Gardens in Fulton.
