Akron -- An Akron man pleaded guilty July 9 to using a dry cleaning business to clean out the pockets of dozens of area residents, including 34 people from Hudson. Michael Bukuts, 46, of Akron, pleaded guilty before Judge Patricia Cosgrove in the Summit County Court of Common Pleas to engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, a first-degree felony; and two counts of passing bad checks, telecommunications fraud, grand theft, forgery, tampering with records, identification fraud, and theft from the elderly, all third-degree felonies, according to the Summit County Prosecutor's Office. He also pleaded guilty to failing to pay state sales taxes or pay for worker's compensation, a fourth-degree felony, the prosecutor's office said. Cosgrove will sentence Bukuts at 11:30 a.m. July 30. Bukuts' attorney did not return phone calls by press time. Prosecutors say Bukuts was stealing credit card information that he obtained from a dry cleaning business, DC LeClair Dry Cleaning, located in Akron and Brecksville, and using it to pay for his own purchases. Most victims were elderly, with losses in excess of $300, the prosecutor's office reported. Victims were from Hudson, Bath, North Canton, Akron and Fairlawn. Read more in the July 14 Hub-Times.
