Summer time and the thieving is easy; Police offer tips on how to avoid theftsJuly 11, 2010
by Dorothy Markulis Reporter Hudson -- It's summer time and the thieves are out there taking advantage of the warm weather, according to Hudson Police Lt. Sean McAleese. "When summer is in full swing, so are the thieves," McAleese said. According to McAleese, thefts from vehicles always peak in the summer months. "With the heat, people leave the windows down on their cars or leave their garage doors open. It's a great opportunity for theft," McAleese said. McAleese advises residents to keep vehicle windows up with doors locked. Police records indicate thieves are opportunistic and will generally ransack unlocked vehicles looking for loose change or anything of value. "If you leave your vehicle unlocked then don't leave valuables there. Take your cell phones, laptops, iPods into the house," he said. McAleese advises residents to be vigilant and call police immediately if any unusual activity or noise is noted. "Don't hesitate to call us. The quicker we get the call the better," he said. "It really helps the police when we are contacted immediately." According to Hudson Police Department records, last year there were 67 multiple reports of theft from motor vehicles involving 179 residents, McAleese said many of those occurred during the summer months.
