Hudson -- A petition circulated by Terry Considine Williams and her daughter, Katy, has returned voters in Ward 1, Precinct C to a polling district within walking distance of their homes.

"People said, 'You can't fight city hall,' but we told them, 'We are city hall,'" said Terry.

They weren't fighting city hall but they were taking on the Summit County Board of Elections, which had changed the precinct's polling place from Redeemer Church, formerly Evangelical Covenant Church, 190 W. Streetsboro St., to Hudson Community Chapel located at 750 W. Streetsboro Road for the elections in 2009.

Ward 1, precinct C is located in southwest Hudson.

The Williams women collected 102 signatures supporting the move back to a polling place within walking distance of many of the voters in the precinct.

According to the Board of Elections, there are 688 registered voters in Ward 1, Precinct C.

"Before the change, most people walked to vote," Williams said. "When they moved the polling place to Hudson Community Church, people had to drive."

Summit County Board of Elections Director Marijean Donofrio said the petition did prompt the return to the original polling location.

"The voters were not happy," Donofrio said. "They said they had to pass their old polling place to get to the new one. We took note of what they wanted, so that's what we did."

The director said she was pleased the BOE was able to accommodate them, since the original polling site was still available.

According to Donofrio, the polling site was moved to Hudson Community Chapel because of the large space available at that location.

Voters whose precincts have been changed should have been notified by mail by the elections board. For additional information, call the board at 330-643-5200.

Polling places will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on May 4 for the primary election, according to the Summit County Board of Elections.

Residents can find their polling locations by visiting the Summit County Board of Elections Web site at www.summitcountyboe.com and following the "Polling Location Search" link.
