PTA volunteer The Hudson Parent Teacher Association will host an informational meeting March 17 at 11 a.m. in the Hudson library for those interested in volunteering at the schools next year. There are opportunities to serve on boards and committees, help out with special events, or contribute by working on projects at home. The PTA wants to recognize an Outstanding Child Advocate who has made a positive difference in the lives of Hudson children and actively promotes and supports their well-being. Nominations could be teachers, counselors, parents, neighbors and/or volunteers. This award will be presented to at the Hudson PTA general meeting and Reflections Art Reception April 22. Submit a written statement (250-350 words) of recommendation for "Outstanding Child Advocate" for a resident, employee or volunteer in the Hudson City School District, explaining why this person should be nominated. Money to benefit orchestra trip The Hudson High School Chamber Orchestra is conducting a fundraising campaign with Malley's Chocolates of Cleveland to support the Chamber Orchestra's upcoming playing tour of Italy. The orchestra is an elite group of string players, ages 15 to 18. Under the direction of Roberto Iriarte, the Chamber Orchestra will represent Hudson and the U.S. at international music festivals in Florence and Rome in July. Montessori plans annual benefit "X Marks the Spot" on May 15 when Hudson Montessori School, 7545 Darrow Road, hosts its annual benefit auction. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a cash bar and hors d'oeuvres. Attendees, including the general public, can bid on valuable items during the silent and live auctions and can buy raffle tickets for a chance to win a trip to Costa Rica or Napa Valley. Second-graders can join Green Thumb Club All second-grade students in the Hudson City School District are eligible to become members of the "Green Thumb Club." It is free, and the only requirement is that the second-graders plant a garden or grow a flower or vegetable this summer. The Hudson Garden Club demonstrated the process of planting seeds to the second-graders on March 3. The students can order one of the following themed seed packs: Itsy-Bitsy-Teeny-Weeny Garden, The Winter Olympics Garden and The George Washington at Mt. Vernon Garden. Each kit contains six packs of seeds and planting instructions. After students grow their plants over the summer, they are invited to bring them to the third grade "Harvest Fair" in September where they can display flowers and vegetables and receive a ribbon and a "Green Thumb" membership certificate. Eighth graders can be locked in for party The eighth-grade annual "Lock-in" will take place May 14 from 8 to 11:30 p.m. All eighth-graders attending Hudson Middle School are invited to attend this traditional end of the year party. The evening will include music, dancing, games, contest, prizes, food and beverages. Volunteers are needed to work as a chaperone, help with set up, run games, serve food, etc. The planning committee is accepting donations of prizes. Seton students place sixth in tournament The Seton Catholic School Science Olympiad team placed sixth out of 25 teams in the Science Olympiad regional tournament at the University of Akron March 6, qualifying for the state finals April 17 in Columbus. Fraternity event benefits $.A.F.E. Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting and finance fraternity at Kent State University, sponsored its first winter Olympics on March 4 to help raise funds for $.A.F.E., a new financial education program of Family and Community Services Inc. The proceeds from the event went to the $.A.F.E. program to aid in its efforts in offering free financial education classes. All classes are free to the public. Preschools registering The Early Childhood Center in the Hudson Presbyterian Church will host an open house March 22 from 4 to 6 p.m. The school serves children ages 2 1/2 through 5 years old. Classes meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the children eat lunch at school. The center offers extended day programs and a Young 5's class for children who turn 5 by Jan. 1.
