The Hub-Times report on March 7 on the federal Race to the Top (RTTT) education initiative makes the program sound attractive and well-intentioned. Unfortunately, RTTT, in my opinion, is just another scheme cooked up by President Obama and Washington educrats. Ohio and 41 other states have been lured into the RTTT trap with the enticement of federal dollars. Hudson City Schools has apparently bought in to Ohio's proposal. Perhaps the worst effect of RTTT will be to force states and districts into adopting national education standards (the Common Core Standards Initiative). That might not be so bad if this were limited to solid academic goals, but in fact the standards are to be "internationally benchmarked." This means indoctrination into United Nations principles such as global governance (loss of national sovereignty), human rights granted by the UN (not God), the redistribution of wealth, gay marriage, legalized abortion, pantheistic religion and environmental activism/sustainability. RTTT also accelerates the idea of cradle-to-college federal control of education. It expands preschool programs and daycare (subverting the rightful role of parents to oversee the care and education of their children), and it seeks to direct students into government-directed career paths ("workforce development"). Finally RTTT seeks further expansion of "longitudinal data systems." This means the federal Department of Education wants to consolidate and have access to data on every aspect of a child's school life -- preschool through college. So much for the right to privacy. I believe RTTT is yet another federal power grab, funded with porkulus (i.e., "stimulus") money, and designed to give Uncle Sam even more control over the citizenry. There is nothing in the U.S. Constitution that authorizes the federal government to be involved in education. It's time to restore local control and state sovereignty over educational policy and spending. Robert Lattimer Hudson Comments
