Hudson -- With the snow melting and the sun making random appearances, the Hudson Summer Music Festival committee is gearing up to make the most of the upcoming summer.

The season will get off to an early start with a pre-festival concert May 18 on the Green with patriotic songs from the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Brass Choir.

"This is the first time we've offered a pre-festival concert," said festival chairman Brian Suntken. "The Bandstand Committee thought this would be a good idea. It will give a foretaste of what's to come."

Suntken is picking up the reins of leadership from interim chair Frank Youngwerth, who took over after Nan Micheletti stepped down last year after seven years as the chair.

Suntken, who came to Hudson from Charlotte, N.C., said one of the things that attracted him to the community was the Green and the Bandstand.

"When Nan told me about the summer concerts, I was excited," Suntken said.

Suntken is pastor of Christ Church Episcopal where Micheletti is a member.

"To me, the concerts are Americana at its best," Suntken said. "To have 2,000 people on the Green listening to concerts on a beautiful night is amazing."

Suntken the concerts could never go forward if it weren't for the generosity of the community.

"It's expensive to bring all these professional musicians to Hudson," Suntken said. "We are very blessed by the citizens, foundations and organizations who sponsor this. We couldn't do it without them."

This is the 33rd year for the Summer Music Festival, organized by the Hudson Bandstand Committee, which brings a variety of musical events to the downtown bandstand.

This year, old favorites will return along with groups new to the festival such as the Wright Patterson choir.

Musicians from Hudson's sister city, Landsberg, Germany, also will debut at the festival with the Landsberg Youth Band Aug. 29 at 6 p.m.

Groups performing at the festival include: Western Reserve Academy Symphonic Winds, Hudson High School Jazz Ensemble, Shout, Dan Zola Orchestra, Stan Hywet's Goodyear Concert Band, Cakewalkin' Jazz Band, Olympic Brass, Russ Morgan Orchestra, Joe Tomsick Orchestra, Freedom Brass Band, Western Reserve Community Band, LaFlavour, Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Night Owls and the BelAirs.

The committee is bringing 17 groups to the Green this year. The concerts are free and open to the public on the Main Street Green.

To help sponsor the summer entertainment, checks may be sent to the Hudson Bandstand Committee, Inc., P.O. Box 892, Hudson 44236.

Funds must be received by April 8 for donors to be listed in the summer program. All donations are tax-deductible.
