Officer dies of 'cardiac incident' after chase

Cleveland Heights -- The coroner's office lists a "cardiac incident" as the tentative cause of death for a Cleveland area police officer who collapsed while running after a suspect.

Thirty-year-old Thomas Patton II was rushed to a hospital March 13, where he died. He was the son of state Sen. Thomas Patton and had served on the Cleveland Heights police force for seven years.

Police Chief Martin Lentz says several officers were chasing a person on foot around 8:45 p.m. March 13 when Patton stopped suddenly and doubled over, then began running again before collapsing.

Cleveland Heights Mayor Edward Kelley says Officer Patton died a hero.

Ex-day care workers charged in kids' drugging

Cincinnati -- Two former Ohio day care workers have been charged with giving children an over-the-counter dietary supplement to make them sleep.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters announced misdemeanor charges March 10 against Pamela Hartley and Donna Scott in allegations that surfaced in December involving Springfield Township Covenant Apostolic Church Day Care in Cincinnati.

A statement released from Deters' office says the women are accused of giving children the supplement melatonin to make them sleepy at nap time.

Hartley and Scott are charged with three counts of misrepresentation by a childcare provider and three counts of child endangering.

Parents told investigators their children often seemed groggy after coming from the day care.

Woman banned from having pets for 5 years

Brookfield -- A woman who had her 97-year-old mother and 200 animals taken from her home has been prohibited from having pets for five years.

Kathy Witzman, 59, of Gustavus Township in Trumbull County, was put on probation March 11 on her guilty plea to misdemeanor animal cruelty.

She says her pet ban will mean unwanted animals will go to a shelter that will kill them because it lacks room. The animal shelter in her area says it has no intention of doing that.

Authorities reported unhealthy home conditions including a urine stench, underfed dogs lacking water and some kept in backyard cages.

The woman's mother was covered in filth and underfed. She was taken to a hospital and then a nursing home.

Man says he hit kids at Walmart for thrill

Columbus -- Police say a man accused of striking children in the head with a key protruding from his fist inside a Walmart store told them he did it for the thrill.

Ralph Conone, 68, was arrested at a Columbus Walmart March 10 on two counts of assault.

Police say a mother had store employees call police after the woman's 6-year-old son told her Conone hit him.

The boy was treated for a minor cut on the back of his head. Police say his 7-year-old brother also had been struck.

Sgt. John Hurst says Conone told investigators it was exciting to hit children with their parents nearby.

Police say they're trying to find two more children seen getting struck on store surveillance video.
