by Bill Hammerstrom Editor Hudson -- The park board has two preferences for naming for the park along Veterans Way. The park board narrowed its options to Veterans Way Park and Village View Park after considering five names at its meeting March 15, narrowed from 57 submitted by residents. The board has no deadline for choosing a moniker for the 38 acres that straddle Veterans Way and now includes the city's skateboard park. However, board president Rob Swedenborg would prefer to have a name selected before submitting plans to the city's review committees this summer. The board's eventual recommendation would be subject to approval by City Council. Plans for the park, frequently referred to as the Village South property, include a shelter, picnic tables, restrooms and walking trails on the north side of the street. Hudson Community First is raising funds and developing plans to include basketball courts and other features for pre-teen and teenage children on the south side. Other name suggestions considered March 15 included Dante Lavelli Park, after the NFL Hall of Fame football player who once lived adjacent to the land; Seneca Woods, after an American Indian tribe that lived in the area; and Freedom Park. Five members of the board wanted to keep Veterans Way Park and Village View Park on the list, while the other three names received support from two or fewer members. Village View Park is an appropriate name because the former Village of Hudson, now downtown Hudson, can be seen from there, Swedenborg said. Veterans Way Park refers to the road that runs through it.
