by Tim Troglen Reporter Hudson -- A recent audit of the district's food service program showed that not only are healthy and creative choices being offered, students are also making conscious choices to eat healthier. "We recently went through our audit that occurs every five years with the Ohio Department of Education," said Maureen Faron, Hudson City School District supervisor of nutrition services. The audit dealt with the nutritional content of the menu, as well as the financial counting of reimbursable meals through the school lunch program. "We met 100 percent of the indicators," Faron said. According to the audit, completed last month, the district was one of seven out of 240 meeting all indicators, such as food offered and choices made by students. "Hudson City School food service staff continue to provide an excellent meals program," said Cheryl Ommert, state consultant for the Ohio Department of Education. "The menu offered are varied and include a nice daily selection of fresh fruit and vegetables as well as an upscale salad choice." According to the report issued Feb. 17 by the Ohio Department of Education, the district "is operating in compliance with all federal and state requirement." The ODE report also stated the district showed "Outstanding record keeping and organization at all levels of meals operation," as well as a commitment "to provide the highest quality foods, a nice variety of meal selections and the creative opportunity for fellow staff to experiment and expand ownership of meals offered." Faron said the students are offered five healthy choices for lunch: a lean protein, a whole grain, a fruit, a vegetable and milk. Three choices are considered a meal. She said almost 100 percent of the time, the students are making the healthy choices. Faron added that research has shown that kids will pick at school what they are served at home. "What was notable about ours is that the majority of the kids chose fresh fruits and vegetables," Faron said. "When offered, they are taking it."
