by Dorothy Markulis, reporter Chomp. Chomp. Chomp. That's me eating my words about electronic communication and Facebook. Admittedly, I had some issues with that particular medium after my grandkids signed me up. First, less than flattering pictures of myself turned up on my Facebook page a couple of times. Then, a smarmy quote appeared on my profile that came from heaven only knows where. That prompted a frantic phone call to my nephew, Robb, in Ohio, from Florida, so he could tell me, step by step, how to delete it. But I am at peace with all that now. We recently returned from a month in Florida. It was the coldest month there in 20 years, but better weather than here, obviously. We couldn't swim or golf, and didn't do much walking. We were confined to a one-room glorified motel room. If it hadn't been for my laptop I would have gone bonkers. I now totally love Facebook. This is diametrically opposed to my earlier judgment of its usefulness. In that one month in Florida I became a Facebook convert. It provided more one-on-one conversations (albeit electronic) with my 20-year-old granddaughter, Nikki, than I had over her entire life. It was fantastic. One night I was carrying on four conversations at once. I was in touch with my granddaughter, my niece, my cousin and my boss. Too cool. I was able to keep up with relatives, co-workers and friends. They all made me feel better by telling tales of giant (and continuous) snowfalls, freezing temperatures, daily snow shoveling and astronomic heating bills. How could anyone in their right mind complain of partly cloudy Florida days and cold winds when everyone's bones in the north were constantly being chilled by the cold? Please don't think less of me, but I guess that was a definite case of schadenfreude -- pleasure derived from the misfortune of others. I guess Facebook serves many needs.
