Hudson -- A new veterinary center and a corporate guest house are in the city's future as a result of action taken at the March 8 planning commission meeting.

Dr. Daniel Bestic's site plan for The Veterinary Center of Hudson at 5980 Darrow Road was unanimously approved by the six commission members present. Neal O'Keefe was absent.

Plans call for a 7,536-square-foot building on a 0.96-acre tract of land. The site would include outdoor and indoor exercise recreational areas for pets.

According to the owner, the center would provide medical, surgical and physical rehabilitation with overnight boarding and obedience training. It would employ nine people, including Bestic.

The approval was granted with eight conditions concerning landscaping, fencing, drainage, curb cuts and right of way guarantees.

The city engineering staff at the Feb. 8 meeting had recommended Bestic seek an agreement with the owners Western Reserve Vision Care, 5992 Darrow Road, to share the existing driveway.

Attorney Joseph Saponaro spoke at the meeting on behalf of Western Reserve Vision Care owner, Dr. Mary Jo Stiegemeier.

He said his client was not interested in a shared driveway.

The site plan was approved without a shared driveway provision. The veterinary facility plan now moves to the city's architectural and historic board of review.

In other action, the planning commission approved a conditional use for a corporate guest house at 88 E. Streetsboro St. (state Route 303).

The three-bedroom home, owned by Tim Clepper, will be used to house out-of-town business clients.

Clepper is a partner with Ellsworth Partners L.L.C., owners and developers of the Turner's Mill complex.

According to Clepper, the Clepper Guest House and Garden will provide short-term lodging for families and business guests coming to Hudson who are looking for an alternative to institutional housing. It will not provide meals or require a staff person to be on premises.

A sticking point for the commission members was a request to use the home for special events, such as dinner parties, weddings or baby showers.

Commission member Dennis Hanink said he didn't have a problem with turning the property into a corporate guest house but was against having special events at the site. Commission member Bob Drew agreed and proposed an amendment that special events not be allowed. The amendment failed.

One of the conditions for the guest house limits special events to one per week, with parking required at a special lot provided by Clepper at Turner's Mill.

The commission unanimously approved the conditional use.
