McDowell Elementary School third-graders Lily Snow and Steven Yang were nominated and chosen for recognition by the "Kids Making a Difference" program, which is sponsored by Royster Realty and hosted by the Hudson PTO. Third grade honorable mentions went to Mary Castrigano, Gavin Haworth, Holly Poremba and Hadya Truesdail. Students selected for this program were nominated by teachers, administrators, staff members, and peers at their school. Students were chosen for their significant accomplishments or achievements in and/or out of school, and for demonstrating their willingness to help those around them and contribute to their school and community in a positive manner. Lily Snow is a third-grader in Mrs. Sears' class. According to Mrs. Sears, Lily is a student that others look up to. She is a rule follower and can always be depended on. She arrives in the morning, hangs up her coat and begins to prepare for her day. Lily completes any seatwork that she is assigned without being told. She loves enrichment opportunities and is not afraid of failure. She exhibits wonderful sportsmanship when she is in a competitive situation and is also very compassionate when her peers need help. She asks the teacher quietly if she can assist them and does not want to draw attention to herself. She cleans up messy floors, straightens games on shelves and organizes the student library shelf. She knows when there is a need and does not hesitate to pitch in to help. Lily is also a member of St. Mary Church and is a member of the choir. She has a lovely voice and recently sang a duet for a Sunday service. She was really nervous but was very happy that she was able to do it. Lily says that she always tries to include others in activities since she does not want anyone to feel left out. Lily enjoys many activities like soccer, basketball, softball, piano and playing with her little sister, Julia. She would love to be an actress one day. Lily believes that kids can make a difference by treating others with kindness and respect and making every day a great one. Steven Yang is an extraordinarily compassionate student, according to Mrs. Booth. He is always willing to step up and help a friend in need. Steven's sensitivity for others was demonstrated with a generous donation of his own money to the Hands For Haiti disaster fund. When he was questioned about whether the amount of his donation was too much he responded in a quiet but compassionate way, "This is something that I really want to do, and it is OK with my parents." Steven enjoys playing basketball and soccer, but also enjoys reading and doing homework. His career goal is to be a scientist and he wants to invent useful items that people can use all over the world to make the earth a better place to live. He might also want to be a math teacher. He believes that kids can make a real difference in their community by working together and collecting money for people in need. He says that McDowell School has been doing this all year and that he feels that they are making a big difference in the world. Mrs. Booth notes that Steven is a model student for his peers and has a strong work ethic is respectful, mature and willing to stretch beyond the normal expectations of third grade. All of his teachers agree that Steven is a student making a difference in his community and the world. The Hudson PTO congratulates these kids who are making a difference in their school and community. The PTO thanks Royster Realty for sponsoring this program and for their generous donation to the Hudson City Schools. Comments
