Letter: Ponders where Obama went wrong

A little over a year ago, President Barack Obama rode a wave of hope and optimism into office. Now, that wave has been squashed by an even bigger tsunami of cynicism and outright paranoia. Where did it all go so horribly wrong?

The president's first mistake was assigning the important task of health care reform to Congress, an august body of legislators who exhibit the same can-do attitude and spirit of cooperation as the Three Stooges, only not as competent.

On the one side, we have the Democrats who are too cowardly to undertake any meaningful reform. On the other side, we have the Republicans whose best idea will probably be to provide everyone with a Snuggie and some Purell. Plus, they threaten to oppose any health care legislation with a filibuster, which is the political equivalent of a child holding his breath until he gets what he wants.

The president's second mistake was to overlook the "bread and circuses" mentality of most of the American public, meaning that if something doesn't involve food or entertainment, it isn't worth our time or serious consideration. Mr. Obama would have had better luck with the health care issue if he had proposed it to us via TV reality shows, such as "The Amazing Race for Affordable Health Care" or "So You Think You Can Cover the Uninsured."

Lastly, the president didn't realize how his very name made so many Americans feel uncomfortable. Barack Hussein Obama -- not exactly a name to counter the almost Islamophobic mood of many in this country. He would do well to re-brand himself with a name that has broader demographic appeal; I suggest Harry LeBron James Potter.
