Rotary Club celebrates silver anniversary

The Rotary Club of Hudson will celebrate the silver anniversary of its annual auction and reverse raffle May 14 at the Twinsburg Hilton Garden Inn. Tickets to the black-tie-optional event, which include dinner and an open bar, are $75 and available from any Rotarian or at The Learned Owl Book Shop, 204 N. Main St.

Hudson Rotary had its first auction in May 1984, and proceeds over the years have benefited a number of organizations. The 1995 auction, for example, netted $15,000 to purchase a minivan for the Hudson Fire Department, while funds for many years have provided college scholarships for local high school students. Other beneficiaries have included Boy Scout Troop 321, Visiting Nurse Services, the Hudson High School Service Learning Class, the Hudson Bandstand Concert Committee and The Gift of Life.

This year's auction's featured beneficiary is Children of Ubumi. Hudson resident, Penelope Frese founded the non-profit organization, and in April 2009, the city of Hudson officially adopted the Ubumi Transit Home in Kitwe, Zambia. The orphanage is home to Ubumi children abandoned or orphaned by AIDS.

Individuals and organizations wanting to support the Rotary Club's Silver Anniversary Auction and its beneficiaries can purchase tickets, donate auction items and advertise in the auction program.
