Stow Players will wrap up its season March 12 through 27 with Moliere's "The Doctor In Spite of Himself." Playing doctor takes on a whole new meaning in this scathing look at the medical profession. Sganarelle (Derrick Winger of Akron) is a tippling woodcutter who brutally beats and verbally abuses his wife Martine (Jennifer Bernhardt of Stow). She determines to punish him for his bad behavior toward her by setting him up as a learned, if somewhat eccentric, physician. Falling for her bait, Lucas (Charlie Johnson of Cuyahoga Falls) and Valere (Marc Dusini of Akron), the stewards of rich landowner Geronte (Richard Saxon of Cuyahoga Falls), implore Sganarelle to come to the rescue of their master's daughter Lucinde (Kristen Vanik of Stow), who has become unable to speak because Geronte has forbidden her to marry her beloved Leandre (Andrew Schaefer of Hudson), who is poor. Lucinde's nurse Jacqueline (Claudia Lillibridge of Twinsburg) sees that Lucinde is feigning an illness that only love will cure. Sganarelle's medical "reputation" spreads, and Thibault (Tom Emerick of Streetsboro) and his son Perrin (Dave Sherman of Macedonia), country fellows who have heard of Sganarelle's powers, ask him to prescribe for Thibault's ailing wife, but Sganarelle refuses to help until they give him gold crowns. Even M. Robert (Dave Hinebaugh of Akron), a busybody neighbor who objects to wife-beating, is forced to admit his meddling in order to avoid a beating. Directing this comic romp is Players' vice-president Anne Guffey; assistant to the director is Marc Howard. Stage manager is Dave Sherman, and producer is Lorena Goold, who is also handling costumes for the show. Crew includes Richard Saxon, Dave Sherman, Mike Guffey, Marc Howard, and Jessie Nedel. "Doctor" runs March 12-13, 19-20-21, and 26-27. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., and the Sunday matinee on March 21 is at 2:30 p.m. A special opening weekend BOGO (buy one ticket, get one ticket free) is planned for March 13. General admission tickets are $12; senior citizens and students are $10. Stow Players perform in-the-round at the Heritage Barn in Stow's Silver Springs Park, next to the Heritage House museum. Entrance is from Young Road only. Call the Stow Players' box office at 330-655-6051 for reservations and information. Comments
