Thank you to the people of Hudson and beyond who so generously supported the silent auction for the relief effort for Haiti at Janet Rhodes brings you Fair Trade.

Their purchases of our Haitian metal art brought in $2,056 which was donated to the Salvation Army; 100 percent of the donation will go directly to the people of Haiti as they try to rebuild their homeland.

We received word that all of the artisans with whom we work are still alive; however, all of them lost their homes and some are dealing with the devastating loss of a wife and children. Donators' support brings comfort and physical relief to those in need.

One of the artisans, Winzor Gouin, sends this e-mail to pass on to you:

"The earthquake has destroyed almost a part of the country but there is something that we can rejoice is the fact you and people around the world are by our side. We are grateful for the support that we are receiving from the States and other countries. We are so scared because until now we cannot sleep inside the house lest they do not fall on us. we are counting so many dead during the disaster we do not even have time to cry for them because we were so scared for our own life. We are very happy the fact we see you are by our side and support us in everything. We are alive: that is the most important thing and also we keep up the work. Thanks a million for your help."

I have marveled often at the many ways Hudsonites have set aside their own comfort to work extra hard for those in need. I am humbled to serve such a community. Thank you.

Janet Rhodes
