Merchants meet The Merchants of Hudson will have their quarterly membership meeting at Deli on Rye in Acme Plaza March 3 at 7:30 a.m. There will be a summary of last year's events and successes, and a preview of what is to come in 2010. The group, consisting of more than 80 retail, restaurant and small service businesses, works to plan events, promote and publicize these events and member businesses, and educate consumers on the importance of supporting local businesses. Airport VP visits HEDC The Hudson Economic Development Corp. will host an event March 5 at the Country Club of Hudson featuring presentations on the Akron-Canton Airport and A Nonprofit Commitment: Lean Communities LLC. Coffee and networking starts at 7:30 a.m. Akron-Canton Airport Senior Vice President and Marketing and Communications Officer Kristie Van Auken will speak at 7:45. A Nonprofit Commitment: Lean Communities LLC Executive Director and Founder Eric Knauf will speak at 8:30. Make reservations by March 3 at the HEDC Web site, www.hudsonedc.org. HEDC has launched its Hudson 100 charitable initiative to establish a $10,000 fund through 100 individual donations of $100. Funds will be collected throughout the year and all monies raised will be donated to one or more local organizations or economic development projects. Recipients will be selected by HEDC trustees at their April Quarterly Meeting. To nominate a project or organization for consideration, submit a brief summary with contact information by March 31 to info@hudsonedc.com. Bartenders tips to go toward fundraiser Marcelita's, 7774 Darrow Road, will host a fundraiser for Nick Guiney's "Angel For Life" Relay For Life team on March 11. From 5 to 9:30 p.m., Nick's parents, Liam and Alice Guiney, will work as guest bartenders. All of their tips will go toward Nick's effort to raise more than $30,000 for the American Cancer Society. Tips can be in the form of checks made out to the American Cancer Society. Nick, an eighth-grade Seton Catholic School student, received the Children in Philanthropy Award for his fundraising work in November from the North Central Ohio Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He also won the President's Volunteer Service Award, and was one of nine Ohio finalists in the 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for raising close to $100,000 for charity. Author signs book on childhood March 6 Joyce Dyer, author of "Goosetown: Reconstructing an Akron Neighborhood," will sign her book on March 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Learned Owl Book Shop, 204 N. Main St. "Goosetown" is the story of Dyer's search to rediscover her childhood neighborhood, and forgotten pieces of her childhood. Dyer is director of the Lindsay-Crane Center for Writing and Literature at Hiram College, and John S. Kenyon Professor of English. For more information, call 330-653-2252. Comments
