Library board election is Sunday

Hudson library card holders will choose from five candidates to fill four board of director seats at the Hudson Library and Historical Society's annual meeting Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. at the library.

The candidates are current member Jack Phipps and newcomers Alex Kelemen, John Karpiel, Debbie Currin and Jessica Carey.

Voters must be over 18, Hudson library card holders and must bring their ID to prove they are Hudson residents.

The library provided these profiles of the candidates:

Jessica Carey was most recently director of operations for telecommunications company. She as a bachelor's degree in management information systems from the University of Oklahoma. Ms. Carey is a board member of the Early Childhood Center, the special needs coordinator board member for the Hudson Preschool Parents, and a member of the Hudson Community Choir. “I want to volunteer to help the library and ensure the programs are here for generations to come," she said.

 

Debbie Currin is an artist and certified parenting facilitator. She has a bachelor's degree in education from Otterbein College. She has been involved in numerous civic activities over the years, including: Hudson Schools volunteer, Vice Chair and Chairman of the Hudson Schools VIP Program, president of Hudson PTO, levy campaign co-chair for Hudson schools, and board member for Actor’s Summit Theatre. “It is my strong belief that to keep a community and a facility such as the library viable, people need to step forth and participate. I have enjoyed past interaction with the library and would like to take it to the a new level,” she said.

John Karpiel has degrees in both chemical engineering and management from Case Western Reserve University and has more than 20 years experience in program management in the public sector, including experience with the Department of Defense, state of Ohio and not for profits.  Past civic involvement includes Chagrin Valley Jaycee’s Blossom Time chairman, Chagrin Valley YMCA board member, and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church board member. “As I am recently retired, I would like to give back to Hudson through community service," he said. If elected, Mr. Karpiel would like to serve on the finance committee, as he is familiar with not for profit accounting and public sector funding.

Alex Kelemen is owner and president of Kelemen & Co., which provides language translation and global marketing solutions. He has an MBA from Kent State and an undergraduate degree from Ohio  University. Mr. Kelemen has been involved with the Hudson Schools 2010 Strategic Planning and World Language Advisory Committee, Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study, All Aboard Hudson, Hudson Youth Development Center and the Cleveland World Trade Association. “I see the role of libraries evolving beyond a repository of knowledge to a town square of ideas,” he said.

Jack Phipps is a current board member of the Hudson Library and Historical Society. Mr. Phipps has degrees from University of Notre Dame, Case Institute of Technology and Harvard School of Business Administration. Prior to retirement, he had various management and executive level positions at companies in the healthcare and chemical construction industries. “I want to be of service to this community in helping to support this library which I believe to be a focal point for this community. I have been serving two years on the board, and feel I can continue to make a contribution due to the experience and perspective which has broadened my view of this institution,” he said.
