by April Helms Special Products Editor The University of Akron was the site for cool art Jan. 13. Members of the university's ice carving team and Garde Manger Club -- all in the UA Summit College Hospitality Management program -- showed off their skills with a series of sculpting-related events at Ice Fest 2010. The free event was at the Student Union, and highlighted both ice sculpting and vegetable carving. "It's showcasing the students' talents and what skills they are developing along with their coursework," said Charlotte Burrell, assistant to the dean in the Summit College at the university. "It also showcases the possibilities for the students." Events included an ice-carving competition during which students Michael Collins of Canton, Shawn Eckhart of Elyria, Erik Freay of Medina, Dan Johnson of Akron and Andrew Zamagias of Alliance. In addition, alumnus and ice-carving gold medalist Aaron Costic and professional carver Jeff Myers carved a 2,000-pound throne of ice. Costic also carved a heron out of ice as part of a competition design demonstration. Three expert ice carvers put their skills and speed to the test in a speed carving competition. Competitors were master carver Greg Butauski, world champion carver Chad Hartson and National Ice Carving Association Executive Director Jeff Petersak. Butauski won for his portrait of Summit College Dean Stan Silverman in an audience vote. The master carver then competed against Chef Richard Alford, associate hospitality management professor. This contest resulted in a tie. Inside the Student Union, several culinary arts students demonstrated vegetable carving techniques and competed in a "mystery basket" competition. "It's fun for the students," said Silverman. "They have a real passion for it."
