by Laura Freeman Reporter Boston Heights -- One year ago on Jan. 19, a Boston Heights Police officer was killed when he was struck by a truck while he was cleaning debris from Route 8. At the officer's funeral service at St. Mary Church in Hudson, Boston Heights Police Chief Joseph Varga said the young officer would not be forgotten. A memorial service is planned on the anniversary of his death to keep that promise. The Boston Heights Police Department has invited the public to a memorial service at noon Jan. 19 at Fairview Cemetery for fallen Boston Heights Police Officer Jarod Dean. It will be at the Safety Forces Memorial Garden at the cemetery next to the police station at 45 E. Boston Mills Road. Officer Dean, 24, was clearing debris from Route 8 near the Ohio Turnpike at 5:30 a.m. Jan. 19, 2009, when a truck traveling southbound struck and killed him. The driver of the box truck, who was found guilty of a minor misdemeanor charge of reckless operation, told police he did not see Officer Dean. Officer Dean was single and lived with his parents in Hudson. Boston Heights Mayor Bill Goncy will speak at the memorial. "Jared was a great guy," Goncy said. "He took his job seriously. "Officer Dean's death made our officers and elected officials think about the job and how critical safety is to all of us," Goncy said. Goncy said the death of someone in the village's police department has made people more aware of how the death of a police officer in any community impacts everyone. Officer Dean's parents, Tom and Marie Dean of Hudson, his brother, John Dean, a Hudson police officer, and other family members are expected to attend the Jan. 19 ceremony, Varga said. "There will be a prayer for him and for his family," Varga said. "Then we'll go inside and meet with the family and remember Jarod." After the outdoor ceremony, the public can meet with the family and members of the local police departments at the Boston Heights Village Hall, where refreshments will be served. "Jarod was an outstanding officer and good kid," Varga said. "I can't believe it's been a year since he was killed. He was with us a short time, but he loved doing the job."
