Hudson -- Santa Claus took a break from his last-minute toy-making rush Dec. 5 to stop by the Gazebo on the Green and check up on the 120 families who waited in line to say hello.

Santa was a guest of the Rotary Club of Hudson, said Jimmy Sutphin, past president of the club.

Santa began seeing families at 9 a.m. Eager parents and children began waiting at the Gazebo more than two hours prior to that, according to Sutphin.

The Rotary Club distributed tickets to those waiting, having announced that Santa would visit with approximately 120 families.

Before noon, all the tickets were gone.

"I got there at 7 a.m., and they were already waiting to take a number," Sutphin said. "And Santa didn't even arrive until 9 a.m."

Sutphin said Santa saw about 20 families an hour. At one point, St. Nick ran out of candy canes, but they were replenished in the twinkle of an eye.

The Rotary Club and TLC Child Development Center raised $507 at the event for the Hudson Rotary Foundation by raffling off a playhouse donated by Little Tikes of Hudson.

The foundation supplies scholarships and helps fund organizations, such as Boy Scout Troop 321.

Sutphin said one boy who visited Santa stood out and made him smile.

He said the boy looked up at Santa and Mrs. Claus and began waving his arms "like someone was out at third base." When he got the attention of the pair, he raised his voice and said "I've been good and I've been bad."

Sutphin said he couldn't hear what Santa told the boy, but saw a large smile cross their faces at the honesty of the visitor who was sent back to his family with a hug and candy cane.
