by April Helms Special Products Editor When Daniel Sovich, 12, auditioned last year for "A Christmas Story" at Cleveland Playhouse, he made it to callbacks but ultimately was not cast. The director told Daniel he needed more experience. Daniel, a student at Harmon Middle School in Aurora, took this advice to heart: that summer, he attended classes and workshops on theater, including a three-day camp in New York called the Broadway Artist Alliance. His work paid off: this year after auditioning for the same show, he landed the role of Scut Farkas, the school bully in the well-known holiday story. It should come as no surprise that Daniel has a passion for theater -- his parents were both active in local theaters (in fact, they met in a production of "West Side Story.") Daniel said while he has done theater elsewhere, this will be his first professional show. In an interview before rehearsals started, he said he anticipated a hectic rehearsal schedule, followed by a busy performance schedule. Rehearsals started on Nov. 3. "I like getting up in front of people," Daniel said of performing. "I like getting up in class for presentations." A profession in theater is something Daniel said he wanted to pursue. "It's definitely fun," he said. "Even if I didn't get in Broadway, there's always movies. My vocal coach once performed on a cruise ship, and got to see the whole world. Now that would be cool." Past shows include "The Little Mermaid" at the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at the Aurora Community Theatre and shows at his school, including "There's a Monster in my Closet." What are his dream roles? "I have three," Daniel responded. "Danny Zuko in 'Grease,' Corny Collins in 'Hairspray' and Fiyero in 'Wicked.'" "A Christmas Story" plays at Cleveland Playhouse Nov. 27 through Dec. 20 in the Bolton Theatre. For details, call 216-795-7000 or visit www.clevelandplayhouse.com online.
