Transition fair helps students with special needs

When many students reach age 18, they typically graduate from high school and move on with their lives.

The next step for a student with special needs is not as clearly defined. By law, they can remain in school until they turn 22. At that point, where does a parent turn?

Stow-Munroe Falls school officials hope to answer that question when they conduct their first transition fair. It will take place Oct. 13 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Stow-Munroe Falls High School commons, 3227 Graham Road in Stow.

The event is open to the public.

"It is for anyone in the area who has a child with a disability," said Sandra Kehn, an intervention specialist at Stow-Munroe Falls High School.

Organizations that have been invited to attend the transition fair include: Six District Education Compact, Option 4/Job Training Services, Project Search, Occupational Work Study/Career Assessment, Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, The University of Akron, Kent State University and Kent State Campus Transition Project, Summit County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Hattie Larlham and several others.
