Community Band offers free children's concert

The Western Reserve Community Band will present its 10th annual free Teddy Bear Picnic children's concert Sept. 20 from 2 to 3 p.m. on the grassy area behind the Hudson Library and Historical Society.

In case of inclement weather, the concert will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sept. 27.

This year, the WRCB is featuring the music of Peter and the Wolf and favorite Disney tunes.

Children, family members and teddy bears are invited to march, sing and dance along during an interactive hour of music, including a march around the library grounds to the classic strains of "The Teddy Bear's Picnic March."

Free cookies and kazoos -- a Teddy Bear Picnic tradition -- will be available to all children.

Pre-concert craft-making begins at 1:30 p.m. in the large activity room at the front of the library.

There is no charge for the concert or pre-concert activities and no advance reservations are required.

Concert organizers recommend that audience members bring folding chairs or blankets.

The Western Reserve Community Band is a non-professional, not-for-profit community musical organization. Since its first rehearsal in 1997, the WRCB has grown from 18 members to more than 60 musicians from Hudson and 18 surrounding communities.

Donations and support are provided by McDonald's of Hudson, Children's Orchard, and Bear on the Square.

Tail Waggin' Tutors return for reading

Tail Waggin' Tutors will return to the Hudson children's library on the first Saturday of every month beginning Oct. 3. Beginning one week before each session, children can sign up to read for 15 minutes intervals between 11 a.m. and noon to local dogs who have been specially-trained by Therapy Dogs International. Session dates for the are Oct. 3, Nov. 7 and Dec. 5.

Cookbook author visits

Cookbook author Bev Shaffer will talk about food writing at 7 p.m. on Oct. 26 at the Hudson Library and Historical Society. Following her chat about cooking and cookbooks, Shaffer and program participants will taste and discuss various kinds of chocolate.

Shaffer is a freelance food writer and director of Mustard Seed Market's cooking schools in Solon and Akron. In addition to developing more than 9,000 recipes, she has taught classes in collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic, the Cleveland Botanical Garden and Akron General Wellness Center. She makes frequent appearances on public television and on Cleveland's TV and radio outlets.

She has authored four cookbooks: "No Reservations Required," "Brownies to Die For!," "Mustard Seed Market & Café Natural Foods Cookbook" and "Cookies to Die For!." The Learned Owl Book Shop will sell an assortment of Shaffer's books at the program. Book signing will close the evening.

PI share secrets of investigating crime

Learn the tricks of the trade and peek into a private investigator's toolbox when Dean Boerger, president and chief investigator for Boerger Investigative Services LLC, visits the Hudson Library and Historical Society Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.

Boerger will have surveillance tools and demonstrate various CSI tools.

"Funday Mondays" are back for children in kindergarten through second grade on Mondays in October from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. This after-school program includes stories, crafts, games and snacks.

Themes for the fall are: "Pumpkin Palooza" Oct. 5; "Rainforest Frolic" Oct. 12; "Eye Spy" Oct. 19; and "Hilarious Hijinks" Oct. 26.

Learn about business basics Sept. 24

The Hudson Library and Historical Society's Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship Research will offer a "Business Basics" workshop Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. as part of the library's Fall 2009 Entrepreneurship Series.

Certified Business Advisor Jim Griggy, of the Ohio Small Business Development Center at the Summit Medina Business Alliance in Akron, will present a comprehensive program for aspiring or already established small business owners and managers.

The workshop is for individuals who are interested in starting their own business or have recently started a business operation. The program addresses the planning process, initial financial projections, ownership options, review of the required forms, as well as loan options and additional funding availability. Participants will receive the business plan outline during the session.

Griggy worked as director of finance at SRA International, the franchisor of Sanford Rose Associates executive recruiting offices. Griggy has bachelor's degrees in industrial management with a concentration in personnel, in computer science and in French -- all from the University of Akron.

JumpStart CEO speaks on entrepreneurship

The Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship Research at the Hudson Library and Historical Society will host an evening with Ray Leach, Chief Executive Officer of JumpStart Inc., Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. as part of the library's fall 2009 Entrepreneurship Series.

Leach will speak about the need for "Ideas and Actions to Take Northeast Ohio's Entrepreneurial Success to the Next Level."

JumpStart Inc., a non-profit organization, was formed in 2004 to combine the efforts of four of the region's entrepreneurial service organizations to support the continued emergence of Northeast Ohio's innovative economy.

Leach has founded five high growth entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial endeavors in the last 20 years. He has been leading JumpStart Inc. His career began at IBM and has been principally focused on information technology companies previous to JumpStart. He is a Sloan Fellow and earned an master's degree from the MIT Sloan School of Management, and also a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Akron.

Program helps students with marketing

The Hudson Library and Historical Society and the Burton Morgan Foundation will sponsor a program to help students with product marketing Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. The guest speaker is Douglas R. Hausknecht, an associate professor of marketing and interim chair of the department of marketing at the University of Akron.

Hausknecht has also served as interim director of the Institute for Global Business and has authored articles in the Journal of Consumer Research, Psychology and Marketing, the Journal of Consumer Satisfaction/Dissatisfaction and Complaining Behavior, and the Journal of the Market Research Society. He has taught graduate courses and undergraduate courses in a variety of marketing subjects.

This program is free to any high school student or high school teacher. No registration is required.

Libraries present programs on Medicare

The Hudson Library and Historical Society will offer a program Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. designed to prepare the first wave of baby boomers for Medicare enrollment.

Presented by Laura Mutsko, a Medicare Supplement accredited adviser and a certified senior advisor through the Society of Senior Advisors, the class offers fundamental information about what Medicare Parts A, B, C and D cover and the difference between the Original Medicare Plan and a Medicare Advantage Plan.

"The transition to Medicare can be a daunting process," Mutsko said. "People who attend one of these two-hour classes are more comfortable when the time comes to enroll in Medicare because they have taken time to understand their choices."

The Peninsula library also will offer a class instructed by Mutsko. "Everything You Need to Know to get started with Medicare" will be at the Peninsula library Oct. 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Craft program offered on 'Iris Folding'

The Hudson Library and Historical Society's Adult Make-It and Take-It Craft Program, at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 and 29, will be "Iris Folding."

Iris folding is a paper folding technique, done using a template, cardstock and colored paper strips to create a spiraling design that resembles the iris of the eye. This technique can be used to make greeting cards, scrapbook pages or designs suitable for framing. Visit www.hudsonlibrary.org to see photos of cards made with this technique.
