by Laura Freeman Reporter Hudson -- After three years of looking at alternatives, work on a main trail to connect the city's east side to the west may begin later this year. Park Superintendent Eric Hutchinson asked Council June 9 to accept bids for the Turnpike Trail, which would be the main east to west connector in the trail system. The trail will run from Hudson Springs Park to the future location of the Brandywine Trail in the northwest quadrant of the city. The first phase, estimated to cost $125,000, will run from Hudson Springs Park along the southern border of the Ohio Turnpike and end at Hudson Aurora Road. The asphalt trail will be 8-feet wide with a shoulder on each side. Construction would begin in the fall. Council member George Roth said some nearby residents will continue to oppose the trail. "A simple majority didn't want [the trail] behind their homes," Roth said. "I hope the owners approve after a few years." Council member Hal DeSaussure said the trail is part of a larger program to tie the community together. The project was originally budgeted in 2006 for $115,000 and received approval by the planning commission and board of zoning and building appeals for wetland variances, Hutchinson said. They approved the project again earlier this year. Council member Kristina Roegner said in 2006 Council asked the park board to look into alternatives for the trail's location. "They did their homework, but at the end of the day we need to connect," Roegner said. Council President David Basil said he supported the trail. "It's critical to the community to connect to each other," Basil said. Rob Swedenborg, president of the park board, said in a survey sent out by the board, residents indicated they wanted interconnecting trails. The project is not in the 2009 budget, and funds will need to be allocated. E-mail: lfreeman@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3150 Comments
