NEOUCOM appoints BeST Center director

The Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy recently announced the appointment of Lon C. Herman as director of the Best Practices in Schizophrenia Treatment Center within its department of psychiatry.

The BeST Center was established at NEOUCOM with a $5 million grant from The Margaret Clark Morgan Foundation of Hudson.

The BeST Center's mission is to ensure that people with schizophrenia and related disorders maximize their ability to achieve recovery by receiving treatments shown to be best practices.

To do so, the center works with clinical partners from Summit County, Ohio and the surrounding areas.

As BeST Center director, Herman will lead the implementation of four treatment programs that evidence supports are among the best practices in schizophrenia but are not routinely practiced: the integration of primary and psychiatric care, the use of specific cognitive behavioral therapies for persistent psychotic symptoms, family psychoeducation and a program for early identification and treatment of psychoses.

"Lon Herman brings a proven commitment to promoting mental health and recovery, especially among persons affected by schizophrenia and other major mental illnesses, and very significant leadership skills in community mental health program development and administration to this position," says Mark R. Munetz, The Margaret Clark Morgan Endowed Chair in Psychiatry and chairperson of NEOUCOM's Department of Psychiatry.
