Hudson High School graduate Nicholas J. Kelly and Western Reserve Academy graduate David N. Suwondo have been selected to receive the 2009-10 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship.

The Byrd Scholarship, a federally funded program, provides $1,500 per year, for up to four years, for each student at an accredited institution of higher learning in the United States. Students are nominated by the administrators or counselors at their high school, or by scoring highly on the GED tests.

"These students should be proud of what they have accomplished and I congratulate them for their diligence in achieving at high levels and for their commitment to academic success," said Superintendent of Public Instruction Deborah Delisle.

The Byrd Scholarship is awarded based on the nominee's grade point average, class rank, ACT or SAT composite scores and other activities.

Three local students won National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among Finalists in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution.

Nathaniel C. Kralik, a Hudson High School graduate, of Hudson received the National Merit Ohio State University Scholarship.

Mengjie Zou, an HHS graduate, of Hudson received the National Merit University of Chicago Scholarship.

Joseph D. Bolognese, a Western Reserve Academy graduate, of Stow received the National Merit University of Southern California Scholarship.

Carolyn Lawrence of Hudson received a bachelor's degree in nursing during graduation ceremonies April 25 at Indiana Wesleyan University.

Alex Hughes, son of Robert and Stephanie Hughes of Hudson, was named to the dean's list for the 2008-09 second semester at Hope Community College.

Rebecca Cargould of Hudson has been awarded a Trustee Scholarship to attend Mount Union College.

Cargould, the daughter of Barry and Lecie and a senior at Hudson High School, is a member of band, National Honor Society and National Art Honor Society.

Trustee Scholarships are awarded to students with an ACT score of at least 27 or SAT-1 score of at least 1220 and either a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or a high school rank in the top 15 percent of their class.

The following area students received bachelor's degrees from The College of Wooster during commencement exercises May 11: Jonathan McKay, a Western Reserve Academy graduate and English major from Hudson; and Ellen Wagner, a Hudson High School graduate and mathematics and computer science double major. She graduated magna cum laude.

Thomas William Smith Jr. of Hudson earned a master's degree in business administration from Bluffton University at the institution's annual May Day and commencement festivities.

Ryan P. Miller, of Hudson, and an incoming third-year student at Case Western Reserve University, was named to the dean's high honors list. Miller, a major in mechanical and aerospace engineering, has achieved a grade point average for this past semester of 3.75 or higher.

Amanda C. Dearborn of Hudson has been named to the spring semester dean's list at Bucknell University. She is the daughter of John and Cynthia Dearborn of Hudson and a 2004 graduate of Western Reserve Academy.

Gavin Irvine of Hudson has been named to the Emory & Henry College dean's list for the spring 2009 semester.

Karianne Dombroski of Boston Heights graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in accounting from Mount Union College May 9.
