Letter: Opposes use of lawn pesticides, herbicides

I wholeheartedly agree with the May 17 letter regarding our optional use of lawn pesticides and herbicides.

People who have chosen to live in this community are some of our country's most educated, brightest, and talented leaders. They are people who care passionately about their children and families. It amazes me, therefore, that the dots are still not being connected between the optional use of poison on lawns and the long-term ramifications on children and the environment. It is a huge blind spot we need to wake up to.

We need to understand that what we are dealing with is simply a "fashion ideal" which is capable of changing. Hudson could embrace the challenge of leadership for the nation in this area, changing the ideal of what a beautiful suburban lawn is. Look to the academy grounds to see how beautiful a natural lawn can be. The letter writer is correct in pointing out not only the beauty of these lawns, but more importantly their life-giving vitality.
