by Tim Troglen Reporter Hudson -- Executives at Acme Fresh Market stores are hoping a newly expanded fuel rewards program will have customers flocking to the stores to get discounts at local Circle K gas stations. The Acme Fresh market Fuel Rewards Program, which has been tried in Parma, is set to hit area stores May 2. Jim Trout, vice president of sales and merchandising at Acme's Akron headquarters, said on a weekly basis ,3,000 products will have fuel rewards ranging from 5 cents to $20. "As [customers] shop, they'll be able to accumulate fuel reward savings," Trout said. "If you choose wisely, you can absolutely walk out of an Acme store with a full tank of gas." Customers will be able to keep track of their fuel rewards balance at the bottom of their Acme receipts, by calling an 800 number or swiping their Acme fuel card at area Circle K stations. All of Acme's 16 stores, including the Hudson, Stow and Cuyahoga Falls locations, began signing up customers last week for the fuel rewards program. The chain used its Parma store as a test model, where customers can already earn fuel rewards for shopping. For example, at the Parma store, a 12-ounce package of Acme's Food Club American cheese costs $2.79 and earns a customer $1.80 in fuel rewards. Food Club juice, at $3.19, earns $1 on fuel rewards. Up to $500 in rewards can be earned on one card. Only one card will be issued per customer, and the credits cannot be transferred to another card. Also, a card which contains a fuel balance, but has not been used for two years, will expire. Trout said the Acme card acts like a bank debit card in that the balance increases as customers shop for groceries and decreases as drivers buy gas. "The difference between this program and another program in the market ... if you've got $50 worth of gas on your card, you can pump it any time," he said. "Eventually, within the year, you'll be able to redeem these at any Circle K nationwide." E-mail: ttroglen@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3146 Comments
