Hudson -- Former City Council President Mike Moran, 44, was sworn in Jan. 5 in Columbus as the area's representative in the 128th General Assembly of the House of Representatives.

Moran said there was a full house for the swearing in of new members. Armond Budish of Beachwood was selected as the new speaker of the House (See the story on Page 12).

"It was exciting to be sworn in," Moran said, adding his wife, daughters and other supporters from Hudson were there.

Moran, a Democrat, defeated Republican Richard Nero in the November election and replaces him as state representative for District 42, which includes Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson, Stow, Silver Lake and Munroe Falls.

Moran said he won't introduce any of his own bills until he has settled in.

"All of our attention is on the economy and balancing the budget," he said.

The two-year operating budget will need to be cut by $7 billion, Moran said.

Gov. Ted Strickland will introduce his vision for the state Jan. 28 with a state of the state address and propose a budget to the general assembly in early February, Moran said.

After committee hearings and discussions, the budget should be adopted in six months.

Shortly after the election, Moran resigned from his previous job as a manager at Thomson-West, a legal publishing company, in order to serve full-time as a representative.

He also had to step down from his at-large Hudson Council seat.

Moran, elected in 2005, served on Council for three years and had one year remaining on his four-year term. Council members have interviewed 19 candidates and called a special meeting Jan. 7 to discuss a replacement.

Moran and his wife, Barbara, have two daughters, Makayla, 7, and Mandy, 5.

Moran has civil engineer and law degrees. After graduating from Georgetown Law School and passing the bar exam, Moran worked for a corporate law firm and then his own law office before working for a contractor for the U.S. Department of Justice.

For the past 12 years he has worked at Thomson-West.
