Not a bad way to wrap up 2008.

The Hudson girls basketball team earned a 79-63 victory over Midpark Dec. 30.

The Lady Explorers (5-3) took a 25-14 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Hudson had a 49-35 advantage at halftime.

Eight players scored for the Lady Explorers. Three of those players reached double digits. Jennifer Lawson led Hudson with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Jessica Monsman and Hannah Jones added and 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Monsman also had six steals and four assists and Jones added eight rebounds and four blocks.

Emily Griffiths had eight points and Callie Drohan and Lindley Hill each scored seven points. Griffiths and Hill each had seven assists and Griffiths notched four steals.

It was the Lady Explorers' third consecutive victory.

"It was our best game of the season, no question," Hudson head coach Dennis Lawler said. "We're playing well right now. We have been doing more defensive-pressure stuff, which is helping us. I was really proud of the girls."

The Lady Explorers made 34-of-65 of their field-goal attempts, including 5-of-8 from three-point range.

"Jennifer and Hannah combined to make 16-of-25 and Jessica was 6-of-10," Lawler said.

And the stats don't tell the whole story.

"The effort was phenomenal," Lawler said. "They were diving for loose balls all over the place."

Lawson had her strongest game of the season. The standout post player has been playing with an injured finger.

"Jennifer is really starting to come around," Lawler said.

If a Hudson player had the ball, she usually didn't have it for very long. The Lady Explorers made sure the ball landed in a teammate's hands if a Midpark (5-4) player got in a Hudson player's face.

On the other hand, Midpark players didn't have the ball for very long.

"We had 24 assists and 20 steals," Lawler said. "We had nine kids with at least one steal and seven kids with at least one assist. Everybody got after it."

Two perimeter players caught the coach's eyes, too.

"[Guard] Ali Czarnecki played very well off the bench and Lindley Hill did a good job running the point," Lawler said.

The junior varsity team improved to 8-0 with a 76-37 win. Natalie Goodson led the way with 20 points and Christie Wade and Whitney Sherrill added 17 and 12 points, respectively.

The freshmen team moved to 3-1 with a 48-30 victory.

The varsity squad was scheduled to visit Kent Roosevelt Jan. 3. Results were not available at press time.

The Lady Explorers are set to host Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division rival North Royalton Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

North Royalton, which features 6-foot guard Jessie Tamerlano, a Bowling Green recruit, beat Hudson twice last season.

"We lost both those games in the fourth quarter," Lawler said.
