City Council OKs its half of pact with Boston Heights

Hudson -- Council members unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding with Boston Heights which could lead to collaboration and sharing of resources to enhance the property along the municipalities' borders.

"It could mean any number of things," City Manager Anthony Bales said. "It could ultimately include a JEDD [Joint Economic Development District] but that is just one option. It could be as simple as talking about that area."

Village of Boston Heights Council member Mike Cheung said none of its Council members opposed the MOU in an Oct. 28 working session and are expected to pass it Nov. 12. If the MOU passes, Boston Heights Mayor Bill Goncy and Hudson Mayor William Currin would sign the agreement.

The section of commercial lands in Hudson and Boston Heights described in the memorandum is bordered by state Route 8 to the west, Interstate 80 to the north, state Route 303 to the south and Hudson's district 6 to the east.

Hudson has commercially-zoned land with utility lines along its western border in the area, and Boston Heights has commercially-zoned land in need of water and sewer service along Route 8, with direct access from Boston Mills and Chittenden roads.

The agreement would work to enhance the mutual properties with available highway access and appropriate utilities.

Hudson and Boston Heights would remain independent political entities. All the land in the agreement is in the Hudson School District.

Both communities would benefit from increased commercial businesses and resulting taxes, according to the proposal.

Some of the cooperative action could include protecting the Brandywine Creek and Mud Brook watersheds, linking the Hudson Crossing business park through to Chittenden Road, agreements with Cleveland and Akron water and sewer, and a JEDD.

"A JEDD would provide an opportunity for us to have an agreement to collaborate on development and benefit both financially," Bales said.
