Hudson -- Finishing strong, the Hudson Parent Teacher Organization is presenting the 2008 Hudson Race Series' final event: "Run for the Schools."

The PTO's inaugural fundraising race, the Sept. 14 one-mile fun run/walk and 5K run will benefit the organization's school grants and scholarship program.

Members chose the fall race, to round out the PTO's calendar, which already includes a membership drive and spring pancake breakfast, said PTO President Jennifer Dudinec.

"We wanted to do a family, community event in the fall," said Dudinec.

Annual fundraisers are crucial to the PTO, which not only serves as a liaison between parents and schools, but also supplements educational needs and school programs, according to the organization's Web site.

"We rely on those," said Dudinec.

During the 2007-08 school year, the local PTO raised more than $100,000 for school programs, events, grants and scholarships, including $1,000 student scholarships to five graduating seniors.

"I think it's nice that, with all the cutbacks, we're able to do things ... to put money back into the schools," said Dudinec.

The PTO-hosted final run in the six-race series that began in May is sponsored by Medical Mutual of Ohio, Primary Care Associates of Northeast Ohio, Vertical Runner, Printer's Devil Inc., Jake's Good Life, and Robinson Imaging Center of Kent.

Sponsors will host a race-day health and wellness fair in front of the Hudson Middle School, with a DJ, raffle items from Jake's Good Life, sponsor giveaways, and refreshments.

Rain or shine, the races will kick off and finish at the middle school, 77 N. Oviatt St. Starting time for the one-mile event will be 1:30 p.m., while the 5K begins at 2 p.m.

Pre-registration entry fees are $20 for 5K participants and $10 for the 1-mile fun run/walk. The first 200 pre-registered participants will receive race T-shirts. Race day registration will be available, at $25 for the 5K and $15 for 1-mile walkers and runners.

Pre-registration packets will be available at Jake's Good Life Sept. 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. or at Vertical Runner Sept. 13 from noon to 4 p.m.
